The cheapest aftermarket muffler was $80 — aluminized steel, and noticeably louder at highway speed. The mid-priced units — Walker Exact Fit or Bosal — ran $120–$170 and were designed to bolt in without cutting.

We tracked four mufflers on the same car model from Q3 2023 to Q4 2024. The mid-priced unit was 90% as quiet as OEM, fit without modifications, and survived a Midwest winter with no visible rust. The $80 unit rusted visibly by spring and had to be replaced.

Do the TCO math: OEM at $260 plus $150 labor equals $410 for roughly ten years of life. Mid-priced at $140 plus $150 labor equals $290 for a realistic six to eight years. Cheap at $80 plus $150 labor, replaced after year two at another $80 plus $150 labor, equals $460 — and my notes show that's exactly what happened. The cheap muffler is the most expensive one. That still surprises people.

So the conclusion here is not "buy OEM." For a Camry you're keeping four to six years, the mid-range aftermarket exhaust is the total-cost winner. I'd take it over OEM almost every time.

4. Braeburn Thermostat Wiring: DIY vs. Professional

Braeburn thermostats are genuinely DIY-friendly. The terminals are labeled R, W, Y, G, and C. If you have a conventional four-wire heating and cooling system, you can replace one in an afternoon. The manufacturer's instructions are clear enough for most homeowners.

The trap is the C-wire. A lot of older systems don't have one, and if you wire the B terminal thinking it's common, the board won't respond — or it blows a low-voltage fuse. We saw this pattern three times in 2023. Twice, the first diagnosis was "bad thermostat." The real culprit was a shorted wire rubbing against a sheet-metal wall.

The comparison here isn't brand vs. brand. It's the cost of guessing.

5. Head Gasket Sealer vs. the Real Repair

Head gasket sealer reviews are all over the place — "miracle in a bottle" or "scam." Based on what I've seen, both sides are right. The difference is which leak you're dealing with.

External oil or coolant weep at the head gasket? A good sealer can genuinely seal that and hold for years. We have a 2004 Civic in our customer base that has been running on a sealer patch since mid-2022 with zero fluid loss.

Combustion gas leaking into the coolant? Different story. We tested a $28 bottle in 2024 on a car with a blown head gasket. It slowed the bubbling for about ten days. Then the coolant disappeared again. That customer was looking at a $1,900 repair on a car worth $1,200.

Here's the uncomfortable conclusion: the sealer was the correct TCO move for that specific car — but only because the owner planned to drive it for a few months and then sell. If you're keeping the vehicle, the sealer is the most expensive choice you can make: $28 now, the $1,900 repair later, plus a possible tow, plus an overheated block that turns a head gasket job into an engine replacement.

I know "the $1,900 repair is cheaper than the $28 bottle" sounds absurd. My experience says it's true. Count the whole failure, not the part.

What Should You Choose?

If you keep cars past 100,000 miles and intend to keep them longer: choose matched aftermarket kits for brakes — PowerStop Z23 for street use, Z26 for trucks and towing — and mid-range aftermarket for exhaust.
