The setup: two trucks, two different answers
I manage purchasing for a small manufacturing company. That means I order the gloves, the tooling, and—when the maintenance manager sends me a parts request—the brake components for our work trucks. I'm not a mechanic. In 2020 I couldn't have told you what a brake rotor actually did.
I learned the hard way. The first brake order I approved paired cheap blank rotors with a premium pad from a different manufacturer. The parts clerk warned me not to mix a low-cost rotor with a high-friction pad. I didn't listen. The fundamentals haven't changed since my 2020 mistake: brakes manage heat, and the parts need to work together. But the aftermarket has. Today's engineered kits are not the novelty they were a decade ago. For a buyer like me, that means the comparison should never start with list price.
